Hello, everyone!

Happy Thursday! I just thought I would post a poem I wrote yesterday called Ten Sequel Commandments!

“Ten Sequel Commandments” is my creative theme song for how I evaluate sequels — whether I’m reading, watching, or writing them myself. Hamilton’s “Ten Duel Commandments” and Ken Miyamoto’s advice on ScreenCraft both inspired this poem.

This is going to be a template for the second half of any sequels that I review on this site or my upcoming other author website, The Mystery & Media Maestro, premiering next Monday.

Anyway, enjoy this poem!

TEN SEQUEL COMMANDMENTS

If you wanna write a sequel that ain’t hollow

Here’s ten commandments you gotta follow

Number one!

 Make sure what came before

Needs a new story

Don’t take your shot

Just to chase gold and glory

Number two!

Write something new

Don’t copy and paste

Pull a Force Awakens

And be a disgrace

Number three!

People want the same but new

So echo the old, yes

But add new beats, too

Number four!

Respect the arcs of characters before!

Don’t open closed doors

That’s a bore!

Number five!

Open new doors instead of the old

Leads to better stories to be told

Number six!

Don’t reinvent the wheel too much

Certain lines there that can’t be touched

Number seven!

A sequel is as good as its foe

Ignore this, it’ll be the start of your woes

Number eight!

The OG characters are your rock

Forget this? You need to take a walk

Number nine!

Your story needs to stand on its own

Don’t make an ending that’ll have

Audiences groan

Number ten!

If you follow the nine,

Pick up your pen

And let the games begin!

CONCLUSION

I hope you enjoyed this poem! Let me know what you thought of it in the comments below!

Is there any other things that makes a good sequel that I missed in this poem?

Stay tuned!

Great poem. I really enjoyed reading this piece. I think you raised some interesting points regarding sequels. It is so difficult to make a sequel that’s successful. If a movie turns out to be a masterpiece, it’s really challenging to follow it up. Few films have been able to pull off this feat. My favourite sequel of all time is The Dark Knight. Nolan’s second Batman movie showcased how to make a great sequel. Thanks for sharing this poem. I really appreciate it.

Here’s my thoughts on “The Dark Knight”:

Thank you for commenting! The Dark Knight is a great sequel! How does it follow each of the ten commandments listed in my poem, in your opinion?
