This poem is for everyone carrying grief right now—whether from the events of 9/11, from losses closer to home, or from the heavy weight of today’s world. On a week when so many are remembering, mourning, or simply trying to breathe, my hope is that it offers a moment of comfort, reflection, and connection.
If there’s anyone else you know that needs comfort right now, please share this poem with them.,
At this juncture we pause
Fists clenched, hearts heavy
No beat, no melody,
Names whispered into memory
Smoke rose, and the nation
Fell apart, pierced by the dark
By the unimaginable
But I don’t pretend to know
The pain you’re facing
How much death keeps erasing
Peace and prosperity
Life’s supposed to create
But don’t be afraid---
There’s someone that’s
Gonna walk by your side,
Talk by your side,
Through the unimaginable
I pray that things will get better
I long for us to stand together
Through this distress
I doubt I can express
This in excess
Forgiveness. Can you imagine?
Too powerful to name, I understand
The world or just ourselves
But when it’s quiet uptown,
Hands and hearts open
Through the unimaginable.
I took some lines from “It’s Quiet Uptown” and a couple of other Hamilton songs, and reprised lines from my Wattpad poem, “I pray that 2021 is better” (from my poetry collection 2021 poems) in order to write this piece.
At this juncture, I’m keeping you in my prayers this week. May you be held in comfort, find quiet strength, and carry hope into tomorrow.
